Sonar Bangla Resorts, Sunderban, Dulki

Area: 8 acres

Client: Sonar Bangla Hotels

Architect: SAAD Artelier

Location: Dulki, Sundarbans, West Bengal

Status: Under construction

Year: 2017- present

The site at Sonar Bangla Resorts presented us with an interesting situation- the locals there shared their experience of the site being frequently waterlogged during the monsoon season. The landscape intends to use that feature to create large water bodies on the site which will collect stormwater while also adding to the experience of being in the deltaic regions of Bengal. Excavated soil from these dug-up lakes would then be utilized to create mounds on the site, which in turn would help direct the flowing water into these lakes.
The built structures on the site rest on these mounds and are surrounded by a network of pathways which connect the service functions to the resort blocks. A sculpture island amidst tall grasses also creates the experience of being with the flora and fauna of the delta. The experience of forest resort is being targeted through fast-growing tropical forests like Bamboo forest, elephant grasslands, and marshy wetland forests.
